Whether you’re aiming to take 30 minutes off your marathon running performance, carry out effective weight loss or fend off diseases, our Human Performance team will assist you on the way to becoming a healthier or fitter version of yourself.

No two bodies are the same, and one person may find that their most effective weight loss method vastly differs from that of another; with our tests, you can learn more about your metabolism to allow you to take an individualised approach to weight loss. We can directly measure your resting metabolic rate as well as your body fat to allow a targeted approach to improve your metabolic health.

Our packages are also suited to those concerned with general health and well-being, including patients with a family history of cardiovascular disease, diabetes or obesity. With the use of our latest medically and scientifically proven techniques, you may reduce the risk of developing such a disease. Our assessments include metabolic DNA and blood examinations, resting energy expenditure, maximal rate of fat and carbohydrate utilisation, and body fat measurement (DEXA) that will guide you to a healthier and more active version of yourself.

What Happens During a Human Performance Assessment?

We will run through metabolic assessments combined with nutritional and body composition analysis to help you understand your body’s energy needs. This will be done in a relaxed and professional environment.

During your assessment, you will undergo a completely painless DEXA scan. This will involve you lying down in a comfortable position on a bed for 40 minutes while your body is scanned by a machine. Unlike an MRI or CT scan, DEXA does not enclose your body in a tube, so you will not feel claustrophobic. 

Your DEXA scan will reveal your resting metabolic rate and body composition.  Your resting metabolic rate refers to the amount of energy used by your body whilst you are inactive, while your body composition will uncover your total fat mass and lean body mass.  Together, these will help us determine your daily caloric and nutritional needs. 

Later in your appointment, we will conduct an exercise assessment, which will require you to spend some time on our state-of-the-art metabolic equipment. This will measure your energy expenditure and substrate utilisation in real-time at rest and during a range of activities.

Medical Metabolic Testing Prices

Aerobic Fitness Assessment £399

The aerobic fitness assessment investigates the overall fitness level by assessing both your Lactate Threshold and VO2max with protocols specific to your sport and fitness level. We will acquire data on the metabolic profile and produce specific heart rate training zones for improving performance or for weight loss, depending on individual goals. This assessment also provides pulmonary gas exchange data that allows us to calculate energy expenditure (calories required) and substrate utilisation (amount of macronutrient used: i.e fat/ carbohydrate). 

The test can be carried out on a treadmill or a bicycle. Your blood will be sampled to measure blood lactate concentration. Inspired and expired air will be analysed throughout the test by using a face mask. 

Substrate Utilisation and Energy Expenditure Assessment £439

This assessment allows us to measure oxygen consumption during a range of activities. This means that we can calculate energy expenditure (calories required) and substrate utilisation (amount of macronutrient used: i.e fat/ carbohydrate). By using this technique, we can measure the maximal rate of fat utilisation.

The test can be carried out on a treadmill or a bicycle. Inspired and expired air will be analysed throughout the test by using a face mask.

Resting Metabolic Rate £399

This assessment involves resting on a bed for 40 minutes and will provide an accurate assessment of your daily caloric needs. An understanding of your energy needs provides a sound scientific basis for any weight loss or maintenance plan. This can then be matched with your energy intake, depending on your goals. Lactate Threshold Assessment £290

This assessment allows us to measure your lactate threshold and provide an estimation of Maximal Lactate Steady State (MLSS) in a professional and relaxed environment. The running speed or the power output are strong predictors of fitness and performance. Well-trained marathon runners operate at a running velocity just above their lactate threshold value for the duration of the race.

The test can be carried out on a treadmill or a bicycle. Needle prick to the fingertip blood samples will be required to measure blood lactate concentration. Inspired and expired air will be analysed throughout the test by using a face mask.

Maximal Oxygen Uptake (VO2max) £199

The determination of maximal oxygen uptake or VO2max is the gold standard measure of aerobic capacity and cardiovascular fitness which correlates with fitness and exercise performance. While high scores correlate with increased performance, lower scores correlate with poorer cardiovascular health. This test will allow athletes to monitor the effectiveness of training and improvement of oxygen uptake.

The test can be carried out on a treadmill or a bicycle. Inspired and expired air will be analysed throughout the test by using a face mask.
